Activated Carbon Impregnated with Elementary Iodine: Applications against Virus- and Bacteria-Related Issues

چکیده

An iodine-doped activated carbon (named IodAC) was developed by adsorbing molecular iodine (I2) on commercially available (AC). Iodine selected with the purpose to add its well-known antibacterial and antiviral properties AC in order produce an innovative material for environmental pathogens control healthcare-related applications. The impregnation method achieved goal of strongly surface, since both volatility water solubility resulted be negligible, therefore it did not affect stability material. test (on Escherichia coli) avian influenza strain) were conducted, showing effectiveness IodAC against pathogens. In addition, also compared slaked lime (a widely used disinfection outdoor spaces livestock farming areas). data proved performance virus bacteria evidenced a more stable long-lasting disinfecting power lime, later reacting dioxide suffering gradually decrease disinfectant power; such drawback does IodAC. Overall, presented results show that can wide range applications, including as granular public spaces, disinfection, zoonotic diseases countermeasures (e.g., animal feed additive control), post-harvest food storage, sanitization. Its characteristics indicate potential medical treatments, blood, intestinal (for HIV, sepsis, irritable syndrome, ulcerative colitis therapy), supplies (antibacterial bandages, gauze, cotton, etc.) sterilization.

The Antibacterial Activity of Activated Carbon, Silver, Silver Impregnated Activated Carbon and Silica Sand Nanoparticles against Pathogenic E. coli BL21

One of the most widely used nanoparticles for water purification is activated carbon due to its large surface area and high adsorption capacity (Ortiz-Ibarra, et al., 2007). Activated carbon has proven to remove bacteria like Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Escherichia coli from fresh and potable water systems (Percival and Walker, 1999; Quinlivan, et al., 2005). Despite electrostatic repulsion betw...

Toxicity Issues Related to Biomedical Applications of Carbon Nanotubes

Carbon Nanotubes (CNTs) have emerged as a potential candidate for application in targeted drug delivery, cancer treatment, gene therapy and diagnostics. This review critically evaluates the biomedical potential of CNTs, and possible toxicological implications. Success of CNTs in other fields has not yet been translated to the biomedical field due to the lack of consistent data on toxicity, vari...

Chemisorption of Arsine on Activated, Impregnated Carbon Adsorbents

This work discusses an ongoing investigation to characterize microporous adsorbents that affect the removal of arsine from air. One aspect of this work was to develop a test system for generating, transport and detection of arsine gas appropriate for adsorbent breakthrough measurements at part-per-billion (ppb) concentrations. Preliminary adsorption data is provided showing the effect of arsine...

Bacteria associated with granular activated carbon particles in drinking water.

A sampling protocol was developed to examine particles released from granular activated carbon filter beds. A gauze filter/Swinnex procedure was used to collect carbon fines from 201 granular activated carbon-treated drinking water samples over 12 months. Application of a homogenization procedure (developed previously) indicated that 41.4% of the water samples had heterotrophic plate count bact...

Magentotactic bacteria and their applications

Magentotactic bacteria are the types of bacteria capable of orientation in an external magnetic field because of the ability to produce structures called magnetosomes. Magnetosomes, nanometer-scale structures, are present in most of the magnetotactice bacteria. They are intracellular organelles composed of magnetic iron mineral crystals individually surrounded by a phospholipid layer. Because o...
